Time to Make a Difference

Make a differenceHave you ever felt you just needed to step in and make a difference? What if you had the opportunity to be part of changing an entire culture of a nation? Would you just say, “I’m in!” or would you ask numerous questions about the cost, the logistics and more?

In February 2013, at an event in Orlando, Fl. an emotional story was told by John Maxwell about his recent trip to Guatemala. The average age in Guatemala is twenty years old. There are severe gaps in living conditions, education and general wealth as in numerous other Latin American countries. The biggest difference in the case of Guatemala is the country, the people, the entire nation are ready for change.

In the audience that day in Orlando there were approximately 700 hundred speakers, coaches and trainers. Some, like me, signed up on the spot without knowing any details, to join a group to travel to Guatemala at their own expense. We were going to train people in Guatemala in seven areas of influence in the country – Transformational Leadership.

These areas are government, business, education, churches, family, military, media and arts. Today, our group of over 140 coaches met with our translators in preparation for presenting to our Guatemala audiences over the course of the next three days. The goal is to train approximately 15,000 people.

Each of these people will then train approximately ten people each over the course of the next six months. Effectively we will have trained close to 150,000 people.

Every single coach paid their own airfare, room and food costs to be here. It is a pure volunteer activity. The entire group is part of The John Maxwell Team. Guatemala Prospera and La Red are part of the team who has laid the ground work for this to take place. At the Palace in Guatemala City, this evening our entire team was applauded in person by the President of Guatemala. We applauded President Otto Perez Molina for his support of his people and their best interests to allow them to grow and learn.

Every single coach is ready to present for two – four hour sessions in the next few days to people who are hungry for change. They each know their country needs change. Each of us is ready to embark on our journey to bring change to an entire nation. One step at a time all marching to the same drum, hearing our own beat, following our hearts to make a difference.

Are You A Coach? Part Two

Business CoachIn the previous article we discussed the business of saying you are a coach.

An excerpt from the previous article:

Everyone is saying they are a coach for anything. This is what has become of the term coach. When starting my own practice as a Business Consultant over ten years ago all that came to mind was my interest in adding value to others and mentoring type of work is what interested me. At that time, in my part of the world, if you said you were a coach to someone, the assumption was you were speaking about your volunteer work and they would ask you, “Good for you, Little League or Soccer?” The concepts of coaching were at that time very California or Boston based. Yes, there were books and a few coaches around here and there, it was not a mainstream topic and certainly not a fully recognized profession for someone to undertake for a living other than Major League Baseball or the National Football League or the NBA and other similar sports teams.

In this article you are taken a step further as we discuss, how are you better than your competition? How about what differentiates you from everyone else in your field?

There are multiple levels to consider when answering these questions. For example, Many people would speak up about their responsiveness and customer care. Other people may refer to how many years they have experiencing their area of expertise.

The key point here is the list has to be authentic and be about you and what you deliver. Here are three items you might consider or not. The point is to get you thinking about your three key differentiators.

Listen to my client.

Honestly, ask yourself, when is the last time you worked with someone who fully and intently were only focused upon you? Your needs, your interests, are the only things they cared about? This is how I work with my clients.

My Network Becomes Your Resource

One of the resources I have developed throughout my years of experience in a variety of business and life adventures is my network. When we work together my network is there to go to work for you.

Return On Investment

Many coaches are asked immediately, what do you charge per hour? We are not having that discussion. First we must meet to determine what your needs are? What exactly are you seeking? Then we need to determine your time frame to meet these goals? Once we determine these answers the investment decision will be clearly be yours to make.

What sets you apart from the pack? What are your three key differentiating attributes?

Why not begin by posting these as comments right here?

Are You A Coach? Part One

Business CoachIf you are saying to people you are a coach be ready for a sideways glance or two.

Everyone is saying they are a coach for anything. This is what has become of the term coach. When starting my own practice as a Business Consultant over ten years ago, all that came to mind was my interest in adding value to others, and mentoring type of work is what interested me. At that time, in my part of the world, if you said you were a coach to someone the assumption was you were speaking about your volunteer work and they would ask you, “Good for you, Little League or Soccer?” The concepts of coaching were at that time very California or Boston based. Yes, there were books and a few coaches around here and there. It was not a mainstream topic and certainly not a fully recognized profession for someone to undertake for a living other than Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the NBA, and other similar sports teams.

Today there is a proliferation of people who will say they are a coach. This will be from gardening, to your home décor, to dating and as in the ad, your pet. A coach for your pet!

What does this mean for you in your specific area of expertise? My suggestion is to absolutely focus on your specific area, skill or value you add. Consider leading with this term or these terms when describing what you do for people or businesses. For Example if you are a Marketing Pro and possibly call yourself a Marketing Coach – A few years ago “Marketing Guru” was perfect. Not so much any longer. “Explosive Marketing Genius”, “Marketing Made Easy Pro” or something which works for you, your personality and will speak to your audience.

The point is that you cannot just say you are a coach with or without a few words before or after the word coach, and assume this means anything to anyone. This is almost like announcing, “Yes, I am a living and breathing person.” Uh, okay, tell me a bit more please?

What else might you do? How about what differentiates you from everyone else? In fact, let’s call this article Part One and the next article we will cover that topic in Part Two!

Zig Ziglar Will Live On Through His Work Teaching Business Success

Mitch Tublin and Zig ZiglarOne of the questions Zig Ziglar answered for me when we met was about being a ‘motivational’ speaker and how do you respond when someone you are discussing this topic with says to you, “Motivational speakers are engaging as it is happening, but then it is all gone when we leave the room.” Zig smiled and told me this story about his response to a corporate booking agent who said something similar to him, “Sometimes people will say motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.” A classic Zig Ziglar quote if ever there was one.

When you consider the concept of spaced repetition for real learning (the concept of reading and listening to the same material over and over to make it stick) Zig Ziglar, Paul J. Meyer and Jim Rohn were three of the leaders in this movement. Yes, they each conducted live presentations. In addition, they had books, workbooks, cassette tapes and courses which you were able to purchase. The technology which exists today certainly places their delivery methods into the, “What, people used to do it that way?” category.

Yet, their content and material remain timeless.

Some examples:

“If you do what you have always done, you will get what you have always gotten.” – Paul J. Meyer

“Be a lifelong dreamer and a goal setter.” – Paul J. Meyer

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live” – Jim Rohn

“Affirmation without discipline is the beginning of delusion.” – Jim Rohn

“If God wanted us to live in a permissive society He would have given us Ten Suggestions and not Ten Commandments.” – Zig Ziglar

“If you want to reach a goal, you must ‘see the reaching’ in your own mind before you actually arrive at your goal.” – Zig Ziglar

You might notice a similar thread throughout their thinking. This is especially true when you read their books or listen to their talks back, to back, to back. The topics are filled with values, honesty, taking a stand and standing for something. A religious base is the foundation, yet not in an overwhelming way. Meaning the goal was to teach and not necessarily be a missionary.

What does come to mind now that all three of these motivational men are gone – who are the next three people? Who motivates you? Who has the quotes and the thinking which inspires you? Let the conversation begin…

Personal Growth Increases The Speed of Business Success

Your personal growth increases the speed of achieving your business success. Do you agree? If you wisely spent some time in July relaxing and refueling, you are ready in August to grow and develop personally.

Your ability to focus on your self improvement, done with the intention to further your business development, will greatly speed up the process of your business achieving the success you desire. What do you do to prepare yourself for your personal growth and to really get into focus for self development?

Here is what I did last night.  I went to a B-52’s concert in Columbus Park in Stamford, CT.  We ( the crowd of a few thousand ) sang and danced and just had a blast!  Now, I am ready to get into my work.  In August, I am dedicating my efforts on John Maxwell’s work on Leadership and Team Building. How about you?

How Do You React When Something Goes Wrong?

How Do You React When Something Goes Wrong?

“Well in a perfect world…..”   Have you ever said these words or heard them stated?  If we lived in a perfect world you would never have to worry about something going wrong as nothing would ever go wrong.

Breaking News – we do not live in a perfect world!

There are different levels of what may go wrong in our lives on a daily basis.  In addition, there are different situations we are in when something may go wrong in terms of your audience and who is around you and influenced by how you react.  You may be around other people, or your family, children or even a large audience. Things will go wrong in our business no matter how much we plan. Part of life is things just happen. It is how we react when something goes wrong which makes us who we are and in many ways determine the level of success you will achieve.

In each combination how you react says quite a bit about you and what people think about you.
Here are a few situations you may have found yourself in. What was your reaction?

For example – You are driving in your car and then you are cut off by another driver. How do you react?  How do you react when this happens and your kids are in the car with you?

I know growing up in New York City, the horn and the bird flip were fairly common practices seen daily on any roadway.  Stop at a traffic light after the incident and heads shouting out the window “Hi, how are you” often followed – Not!

Another example – In running your business, how do you react when someone on your team puts out some work on the internet that is riddled with errors?   Are you able to handle the situation as a teaching moment and rise up and above?

The incident happened already.  Your ability to teach and team build is right here in front of you.  Do you take it?

How is the corrective action carried out?  These are all moments to use in creating a stronger team for your future business growth.

A Recent Example – Do you speak at events in front of a large audience?  What would you do if there were microphone or sound system issues? How would you handle yourself out on the stage in front of several hundred audience members who are mostly fans?

The specific point is if you are an expert and plan to be in front of others representing your business and your brand, you must be able to have the control and the presence to relax and go with the flow. Are you able to relax and maintain your presence?
