Do You Do It Alone?

Do you do it alone? Get a support team!Consider a list of ten names of people you look up to and you know they are really successful at what they do. You do understand that they did not get there by themselves. The most successful people do not do it alone. They either have a tight team that they rely upon and who may have moved along with them from one company or effort to the next one. They most likely have a few specific professionals who provide certain services along with them.

For example: Think about highly competitive athletes. You select your sport. Maybe it is skiing or golf or baseball or futbal or American Football – you select the one you are a great fan of – that sport. The top three to five people in that sport, what separates them from each other?

In fact the top twenty to thirty people are all putting in the training regimen, the workout, the practice time, the diet – so what is it that differentiates the top three or one from the rest? It is their mental approach. How they handle their performance under extraordinary pressure time and again, over and over. Plus, how they approach their training regimen, their workout, their practice time, their diet – the mental approach they bring to these efforts each day as well.

This is the great separator. The example is for highly competitive athletes, however, it is the same in the world of business, start-ups, entrepreneurs and politics! No different.

Let’s get started now and build your team.

Who is on your side now? Do you have your own support team – your own support network? Either write out their names and what they bring to the table or if there are no names what are the functions – the specific areas of support you wish to have on your own support team? List this out right now.

The next step is either to approach the people and ask them if they would participate with you on your team or if you have no names on your list begin to locate the people who would provide the functions you listed – the specific areas of support you wish to have on your team. If you are stuck right here and you are not clear or you do not know how to accomplish this step – contact me here.

Where Do You Have An Impact?

Where do you have an impact? By design in your life, in your choices, your actions, your behavior – do you ever consider “where do I have an impact?”

Take a moment and list these – yes right now – write them down either print this out and write them here or take out a notebook or open a new place on your device and take notes.

“Where Do I Have An Impact?” What if we now switch this around and ask instead, “Where Do I Intentionally Want To Have An Impact?”

John C. Maxwell and Mitch Tublin in ParaguayThis last week myself and 250 other John Maxwell Team Certified Trainers, Coaches and Speakers returned from spending a week in Paraguay. Our goal was to train 10,000 people to become facilitators and in the classic train the trainer format continue on with at least four other people. Then have them continue on with four people. Four people as a minimum number.

Paraguay has a similar issue to other Nations in South America and Latin America with deep roots in corruption and the aspects which go along with these lines. Paraguay has it’s own unique issues from a devastating war which wiped generations of men off the map plus land and control in the region loss as well. With this being said there is a generation of young people who are striving for and hunger for a new start. A new way of life – without corruption. Where values based leadership is the driving force throughout all of society within Paraguay.

Each of us knew the following each and every day once we arrived in our staging/breakfast room at 5 AM: You are going some where, with some one, at some time, to do some thing with people. With people who want to make a difference at a time – at a time to make a difference.

That is all we knew! It did not take me long to realize the impact on the people. A session might begin with some disbelief or someone wondering how such a huge undertaking is even possible? By the end of the session upon realizing that if each person did one small thing, did their part, added all up, a huge movement would be taking place. With tears in their eyes as the session closed, with selfies being taken, hugs and kisses being given freely it was clear the seeds of transformation were planted.

La Transformacion esta en mi!

This is the line used and it appeared on materials, jerseys, handouts, gear and in the Presentation itself as a team building and bonding shout out together.

The Transformation Starts With Me!

Even writing this out now chills run through my body with such joy for the people of Paraguay as they begin this journey. There is no way we met by accident. This Movement and each one of us who volunteered to Intentionally Impact People in Paraguay to bring values based leadership and Transformation to their culture and society this did not happen by accident.

Is it time for you to act intentionally in your life? Are you ready to break the daily ritual and instead make an impact with meaning?

Are You Becoming A Cave Dweller?

Tcave-in-rockshe cave dweller syndrome may be impacting your ability to connect, communicate and socialize. A CEO may have cave dweller syndrome. This is when the CEO has the hidden corner office and rarely comes out to interact with fellow employees. A large publicly traded company CEO may have access to a limo, a protection team and a private jet. Not much interaction going on here with the “regular folks”.

The CEO might answer, “Do you know how many meetings I attend?” … “Okay and how many people there challenge you or in reality bobble head yes to everything you say. This is not interacting. It is closer to dictating.”

A founder of a start up may spend hours or even days locked up working on the idea, the concept, the rollout and easily loses track of time. Often the human interaction in person with other people may fall by the wayside. As cave dweller syndrome sets in there is limited feedback or interaction from the outside world.

The entrepreneur busy running their own business may have cave dweller syndrome. They may find themselves squirreled away for hours on end working on their business and not interacting, not networking, not socializing with other people other than their family and often not doing this too well (a topic to discuss in another article).

Recently in speaking with one of the under thirty generation about daily habits, work and productivity, the topic of staying in touch with the news and current events came up.

Basically the entire idea of staying in touch with what is going on in the world and current news is considered ‘clutter’ of the mind. If a topic of interest happens to come over on twitter or on facebook and the item appears to be of interest, well then it is looked up online. Maybe one or a few newsfeeds are subscribed to or not.

What do you think about this behavior? Would you consider this to be higher productivity and a clear mind to get work done more effectively or another cave dweller syndrome participant?

Here are a few suggestions which will not greatly interrupt the established routine and may actually pull someone out of the cave dweller syndrome.

First – join a round table or a mastermind group. The CEO might participate in an Executive Mastermind Group. Confidentiality is primary and best practices and advice are openly shared. Similar to groups run by me.

Second – work with an Executive Coach, trusted advisor, a person from the outside who is there for you and only for you. Study after study reflect the great performance improvement and impact of working with an Executive Coach. The ICF certification held by me is attained by less than 5% of coaches.

Third – network like your life depends upon it. NSN – Never Stop Networking. Start by approaching this by thinking – “how may I add value to others?”

What is Unique About Your Product or Service Based Business?

What is Unique About Your Product or Service Based BusinessAre you another – INSERT YOUR BUSINESS TYPE HERE – like all of the others who are in – INSERT YOUR PRODUCT OR SERVICE HERE?

No?

Of course not!

Your product is special because of the reasons you know, the originality and unique aspects of it. Or it is an organic item from specially grown – whatever it is.

Or the service you provide gets amazing results for your clients. The people you work with rave about working with you.

In fact, anyone who speaks with you in person finds out this information fairly quickly as you are each learning about each other’s businesses.

You know the special attributes of your business. You have fans and customers or clients who gladly offer testimonials for you. Here is my question. Why do you market, advertise, write copy, conduct your social media – like everyone else does!

Okay even more to the point – why don’t you explain in a unique way what makes you and your business unique?

Here are a few reasons why you follow the crowd in these areas.

  1. Experts are saying these are the methods that work so everyone is following along. This is interesting, however, there was a time when everyone said the earth is flat. One thing to remember about these experts is they are experts at selling the solutions that everyone buys into, not necessarily running a business and actually putting anything into practice other than selling these ‘works every time’ solutions.
  2. You read the social media posts and realize you must be missing something so you either do it yourself or hire someone to replicate what you see everyone else doing so you don’t miss out. If you are a follower of the stock market, when you start to see everyone buying into the position of a company, or the market and new highs are being made everyday, the saying goes ‘you are chasing the market’.Please do not take this to heart without doing your own research or seeking the advice of a properly licensed investment advisor. The statistics show that when people buy into the market when the market hits new highs, are often the same people who sell when the market is near, or has hit new lows.  Think about it for a moment. This is not investing, it is gambling.
  3. You find it easier to copy what others are doing than to create your own strategy for your business. If it was this easy everyone would be rich!

Here is one single tip for you to standout and let people know how great your product or service based business is – work with a business coach! More specific tips in the next article. Come on back!

Values or Money Which Means More To You?

values-or-moneyThe other day it was cool enough outside to create a need for the heat to turn on in the house. The thing is there was a problem. We could tell something was not right, so we hit the emergency kill switch. Now when the technician comes into your house and starts poking around do you really have a clue what they are doing, looking at or what the end result will be?

When working with a client you see the solutions. You see the answers. The coaching process demands that the coach does not ‘tell’ the client what to do. The client must ‘discover’ their own answers from within. This is for meaningful growth and change to take place. Is this how you practice your coaching?

There are coaches who often step in and step out. This means they are requesting permission or stating, “May I take my coaching hat off for a moment?” Then they proceed to offer their client opinions, directions and statements of direction, none of which are part of the practice of coaching an individual. Does this describe your method of coaching?

Feel free to state your views and practices in the comments area.

The point of this article is if we are to add value to others we should want that value to stick. While we are there for our client we cannot force a client to change, to grow, or to act. A client must want to do these themselves with our support and guidance as professional coaches. Anything less is to cheat the client of the opportunity for true change, true growth, and taking real action.

Consider for a moment the consultant who works on a project for an hourly rate.

Is there an incentive to add value and provide solutions to the client or to continue to ensure there are more hours to bill to the client? The consultant who instead bills by the result and the solution will be paid in full as the result and the solution are worth the fee paid. The time it takes is not material to the conversation. It should not matter if the result and the solution takes one day or six months.

In a similar fashion a coach who designs their practice to where the coach becomes the crutch and the client always needs to use the crutch is setting themselves up for more hours to bill than to provide the client with true value.

It is when this is done by design the question is – values or money which means more to you?

Where Do You Measure Up On Commitment?

commitmentWhen running our own business we have to set priorities. Let’s assume we all buy into that statement. If not, leave a comment and the article on that topic will be sent out, and quickly. The point of bringing up priorities is commitment. When we each make a commitment to either do something, or be somewhere, or meet with someone, or follow up on one item or another – do we always follow up on our commitment and do it?

Let’s explore a bit deeper into this topic when someone does not follow through on their commitment.

First – we have all had this happen, someone says to us, “Of course I would be happy to…”   Whatever the rest of the sentence is you fill in the blank.  For  example it might be anything such as: “…introduce you to the CEO over at…” OR “…yes I am a member there and will absolutely invite you to one of our gatherings…” Then what takes place is nothing. You might even follow up with the person. You might even meet with them or see them again at a networking event. Yet sadly, nothing is mentioned regarding the previously stated commitment.

Second – have we made an error in assuming we had built a relationship with someone? The relationship building must come first. This takes place through interaction, communication and sharing some time with each other. A relationship will absolutely be created faster with in person contact and communication and take longer when the contact is over the phone or through the use of texting or the internet.

Third – did we participate in creating a feeling within the other person that they were being backed into a corner to make an offer and really did not have any intention of following through. They just wanted us to go away? “How do I get out of this?” They are thinking to themselves.

Fourth – if we were the person in the previous situation – have we ever made a commitment and then not followed through? Why did we do that?

In summary, a commitment should only be made when we are prepared to follow through. Period. End of story. If you put something out there take care of it.  If not then keep your mouth shut.

If you are seeking favor from someone and you do not have the relationship built with them yet, focus on building the relationship first. Build the relationship in full authenticity not because all along you know at some point you are going to ask for a favor.  This is not at all what is being suggested. The point is do not ask for favor when it is based upon nothing other than you asking and your hope the person is in a charitable mood. What this does is you are viewed as a charity case and more often than not if the commitment is made and they have not read this article you will never hear from them again anyway!
