Do You Have Grit?

Do you have grit?No matter where you live in the world this one fact is indisputable. The end of January is right upon us all next week.

Is this fact shocking to you? Are you asking yourself – where did this month go?

If you made some New Year’s Resolutions – how are they going? There is a saying: how you do anything is how you do everything.

My guess is how you handled your January, how you handled your New Year’s Resolutions is how you are going to handle each month for the rest of this year and every goal setting or promise you make to yourself as you move forward.

What will it take for this not to be true? GRIT. That is right: GRIT.

Grit means to me how you describe a person who has the resolve, the determination, the strength of character to move through anything to get where they want to go or to achieve something difficult. This is what it takes to move through a list of goals toward one or more objectives.

Now this means the goals still have to be stated in the proper S.M.A.R.T. way. The progress or not toward meeting the goals must still be tracked. It still means the goals must actually be meaningful toward meeting one or more objectives (think – what is my Why?).

Grit means seeking out people who will hold you accountable and meeting or at least communicating with them regularly in a scheduled format. This is to hold you accountable – the missing ingredient for the majority of people who fail to achieve anything through their haphazard resolution or goal setting process.

The question remains for you to answer – Do You Have Grit?

Let’s see if you will get going now and get started –

  1. Write out your top three objectives you want to achieve this year for your personal life (3) and in your business or career (3).
  1. What exactly will you do starting next week toward achieving these?
  1. List out five people you will share this information with.
  1. Ask a person to be your accountability partner. A person who will agree to hold you accountable by meeting with you or communicating with you on a regularly scheduled basis.

Now show your grit. Follow these steps and you will be ready to grit it out this year.

If you are one of those scoffing at this process it is okay. I still love you. You just have no grit!

Are You Ready For Your Inauguration?

Are You Ready For Your Inauguration?in·au·gu·ra·tion
iˌnôɡ(y)əˈrāSH(ə)n/
noun
noun: inauguration; plural noun: inaugurations
Defined:   the beginning or introduction of a system, policy, or period.

For Example –

    • a ceremony to mark the beginning of something.

Are you ready to announce and declare your Inauguration?

You are part of a company or large organization – Declare no more unnecessary meetings! Have an inaugural event and make this stick. Define what is a necessary meeting, how it should be structured and how many people must attend. Most importantly how will the follow up and accountability for action steps determined be handled?

You have your own business – Declare you will manage your time better by tracking what you do each day and reviewing at the end of each week where you wasted time and where you optimized your time. Make it your business to spend more time on income producing items and less time on anything else. Announce your intentions with an Inaugural Event! Even if this is only through email. It will serve notice that nonessential emails may not be responded to immediately any longer.

You are in career transition (meaning – you have been let go, you are considering leaving your position, you are able to read the tea leaves and know you will be let go OR you have been out of work for a while) – Declare you are going to be open to feedback and you are going to seek it out. Declare you are going to recognize you are now in marketing and sales – the product is YOU! Declare you will create a strategy and a plan and have accountability set up to hold you to it. Announce your intentions and let people in your network know what you are doing (be careful here if you are still employed while seeking a position elsewhere).

The point is to take action! Kick off with your Inaugural Event and celebrate and announce what you will be doing. There is no excuse. Part of a company or a large organization, in your own business, or another situation… it makes no difference. Only you, yes you, are in charge of taking action.

Use the comments area and make a statement right now what action will you be taking.

Not ready to go public? Fine. Write it out now and then follow up and make it happen.

Watch your email for an invitation to a no cost call on goal setting coming up soon!

Use It Or Lose It!

check-wenkroyThe month of December brings along much joy, warmth and pleasure to many people. It signifies the end of the calendar year and for a great many organizations the end of their fiscal year.  Corporations, not for profit charities and a variety of associations and other businesses have allocated funds for development, training and materials which if the funds are not utilized by the end of the year they are lost.

Potentially even more impactful to their budget is the allocation in the budget for the upcoming year or two may be reset to the lower number of dollars actually spent in this previous year for this category.

When this topic is discussed by me certain people say, “This is not true! Why would this  apply to a Non- Profit Organization?”

It definitely does apply and here is one small example. From a variety of my contacts on the Board of Directors of certain Non-Profit Organizations, they tell me the business and the people in a Non-Profit may need development and training in leadership, communications, and presentation skills more than some of their corporate sponsors. In fact, they would find the money as long as the Non-Profit would agree to spend the money specifically on it and not something else.

If you are in this type of situation or know of an organization which is please stop right now and contact me with your information or an introduction.

This is an investment in the future of your organization. There are many reports which state that organizations are spending quite a bit on leadership development and training within their organization and they still are not seeing the return on their investment.

Now this is not to knock the Human Resources folks – and let’s be careful here not to feel offended as this is not the purpose here –  often a training and development workshop or course is brought in with the mindset that it is a one time event.  For the most part this is due to the larger organizations who are hired are set up to deliver their workshops and courses in this manner.  Once the workshop or the course ends everyone goes back to conducting themselves exactly as they did prior to the workshop or course.

The more effective method of delivery to have an impact and to create a change in behavior is through spaced repetition. For example – If you consider marketing and the use of media it is through the repetition of the brand, the message, the reason through a  number of different sources which translates into the attainment of a customer.

By incorporating spaced repetition into the delivery, this continued contact and engagement in a variety of methods keep people onboard and accountable. They are able to grow and their behavior changes along with this process.

The ultimate goal and deliverable must be supported from the top of the organization as well. When a shift in culture or behavioral change is the deliverable the fastest way to undo everything is to have a leader in the organization or a manager continue to present themselves the same exact way they always have while expecting everyone else to change.

There are numerous ways to take advantage of this end of year opportunity. Here are a few examples where either a deposit or a full payment in December 2016 will secure top notch development, training and resources for individuals and/or groups:

  • High Performance Coaching
  • Effective Personal Productivity
  • Effective Personal Leadership

These ALL INCLUDE areas where goal setting and the accountability to carry these through are part of the program. Each of these are from start to finish designed for an initial 90 day effort.

Setting Goals Is A Waste of Time! Right?

By now the majority of people, yes, each and every one of you, have sat through one or more goal setting seminars or workshops.

You know the drill. There will be slides about S.M.A.R.T. goals and why this is very important.

There will be a discussion about not giving up on your dreams and having great big goals. Someone might even ask the group, “How Do You Eat An Elephant?”  Answer – “One bite at a time.”   This may be true – what if you don’t eat meat! Seriously this is not meant to make fun of this important information.

All of our goals should be S.M.A.R.T. goals.

Here is the rub, with all of the articles and all of the books and all of the courses, why is goal setting looked at as a chore and worse yet as something that does not work and is a waste of time by so many people?  Why do so many goals which are set each year in December or January when revisited at some point are found to not be attained?

The reason is we all want to keep our goals to ourselves!

Setting Goals - Waste of Time?It is like we have a huge Do Not Enter sign up and no one is allowed to see our goals.

Now the goals we set should be for our career, our business and for our personal life and our families.  Why on earth do we feel these are private matters?

The best way to insure your goals are met is to create a method of accountability.

This may be accomplished in a variety of ways. You might have one or two people at work or on your advisory board for your business each share their goals with each other and have a regular meeting to hold each other accountable.  Unfortunately, this meeting will begin to take last place when a few weeks or months go by and then no one will be held accountable to each other.

You might have a close friend or family member set goals and you set goals and each of you agree to hold each other accountable.  Sad to say what often happens is each person will accept the excuses of the other person instead of pressing for the plan with each other due to the family relationship or friendship. Goal setting and attaining goals is not easy.

It works but it must be worked.

The absolute best way to set goals, achieve goals and move toward your bigger goals is to work with an experienced coach and a group which is guided through the process of goal setting, keeping accountable and continually communicating with the coach and others about your progress.

If you are ready to finally take charge of your goal setting, make certain you are signed up for my weekly newsletter. There will be a free call in December on goal setting. Yes, no charge. You must be signed up to receive the email which will announce the call information.

Going for Gold – Part One

Who is Going For Gold today?

Going for GoldIs anyone watching or at least checking in on the RIO 2016 Olympic Games at various times each day? This is definitely the topic of conversation in person, at the pub, at home and definitely online.

NBC Universal has more options available for streaming or watching events on TV at all different times than in any previous Olympic broadcast. It seems like the hours of coverage are non-stop.

While enjoying the competitions and the Rio De Janeiro scenery and the various story lines do you ever consider what business lessons are available from the Olympics that you are able to bring into your company?

Let’s take a look at the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team. This week it is clear these women, calling themselves the Final Five, are setting margins of victory as they secure their Gold Medals that are historic in the sport of Women’s Gymnastics.

Let’s go back to the early 2000’s. The U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team was in turmoil.

The various personal coaches were squabbling with each other. Each gymnast and their entourage were certain there was an ‘I’ for them in the U.S. Team. The concept of a consistent process or system for everyone to follow was nonexistent.

In case you never heard this from a coach – “There is no “I” in “Team”.

Now enters Martha Karolyi who is given the title, support and the freedom to create what it would take to make the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team a great one once again.

Begin with this in mind, she had a vision of where she wanted this program to go. She knew what had to happen for this vision to take place. The road was not a paved highway right to her goal. There were obstacles, naysayers and people who did try over the years to bring her down. It’s a funny thing how success repeated over and over will quiet down your critics.

Here is how Karolyi started out. She met with all of the gymnasts and set their expectations. Like clockwork everyone was being held accountable each month at training camps specifically set up to check in and see where everyone was and were they in fact showing progress or not. By itself this was major progress. The other benefit is the gymnasts began to develop into a team through the chemistry created by spending the time together each month at the training facilities. Then the barriers fell away between the coaches and their individual issues with each other as they saw what was taking place.

In one year the results were seen in competition after competition as the team won medals consistently. The U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team in London in 2012 was Going For Gold and did so in great style. This Final Five U.S. Women’s Gymnastic Team in RIO2016 has taken Martha Karolyi’s vision to a whole new level.

Do you see one or more items you might be able to bring into your organization from this story?

  • set expectations
  • create accountability
  • communicate
  • form a process and a system
  • have the control and the support of the top people to do what needs to be done
  • mold a culture in your image
  • what else?

Do You Create Momentum in Your Business?

Do You Create Momentum in Your Business?Have you ever heard – “Good things come to those who wait!”

More importantly – Do you actually believe – “Good things come to those who wait!”?

Sad to see you miss this week’s article if you do stop reading now and go wait somewhere for good things to come.

Who decided it was a great idea to recite sayings such as this one and then plant these seeds into the minds of young people? Young people grow up and in their subconscious reside this type of hogwash. Then to repeat the process for each generation again and again.

Nothing – Absolutely nothing is taught with statements of negativity such as this one.

Let’s go on to prove this is true. Momentum in life, in business, in sports is something you are able to feel. You feel the activity – the actual shift in energy – it happens when action is taken and then in your life – in your business – in your sport – everything begins to click. This is Momentum. Momentum is never started by waiting. It is impossible. It is against all of the laws of physics. It is against all of the laws of nature.

Yes that is correct – Nature! Consider for a moment – a tornado – a hurricane. Check it out – Momentum is picked up and the winds gain speed and things begin to move quickly. None of this takes place with waiting.

From dictionary.com momentum definition is: Force or speed of movement; impetus, as of a physical object or course of events.

What would assist you in creating momentum for you in your life – in your business – in your sport? Would you find participating with other like minded people who are seeking to create their momentum to be of interest for you? Find out more here.

A group provides accountability and if by a phone conference line it provides anonymity if you are shy! Mitch is a Master Facilitator and you may find this group process to be exactly what you need to create your momentum. It is not about waiting for good things to come. Instead it is taking action – creating motion – stirring the pot – getting excited about doing something.

Here is the thing… you have heard this saying before no doubt… The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and over again and expecting different results. You must change it up! Try something new. Quite often a slight shift in course will make a huge difference.

My good friend, Les Brown has told me and others numerous times, “You can’t see the picture when you’re in the frame.” This is why the group process is invaluable for you!
