You Cannot Control Everything

You Cannot Control Everything“It’s not like I let people do things for me, so I guess you can call me a control freak, or you can call me passionate.” ~Courteney Cox

In our lives we cannot control everything. Those who try to control everything around them will ultimately live a miserable life. Imagine in your own personal life if you were able to control every single thing. What would that list look like against the reality list of how everything actually works? Why not list this out right now? Try something like this:

IN MY LIFE I WANT TO CONTROL:

1.

2.

3.

IN REALITY IT WORKS LIKE THIS:

1.

2.

3.

The key now is to own this list. Be okay with not being able to control each of these items in the reality column. Look over the items you want to control and determine if this really must be the case?

How about our lives in the business world? What if we were going to be able to control everything. What would be on this list now after comparing it to the original list? Would anyone else continue to work with you?

IN MY BUSINESS (OR CAREER) I NEED TO CONTROL:

1.

2.

3.

IN REALITY THESE ITEMS ARE NOT UNDER MY CONTROL:

1.

2.

3.

In the business world how much of a problem are the items not under your control?

“Why worry about things you can’t control when you can keep yourself busy controlling the things that depend on you?” ~Unknown

This is especially dangerous behavior for an entrepreneur or anyone in a start up company. In a perfect scenario each person has their area(s) of expertise and they need to be given enough freedom to complete their mission.

If you are an entrepreneur or working in a start-up company try filling in this list:

TODAY I AM ABLE TO CONTROL:

1.

2.

3.

I AM OKAY WITH NOT BEING ABLE TO CONTROL:

1.

2.

3.

Is it productive to be a total control freak at work? Is it okay in the business to share ownership across various people?

For us to stand a chance don’t we have to be comfortable with ourselves and our own beliefs. The flip side of that is to listen to what others have to say as anyone of us would be able to fall back into the ‘control this’ model.

‘Paleo-ing’ Your Business and Career Is the Key Ingredient for Your Success

Dr. Patty AnnBy Dr. Patty Ann – www.drpattyann.com
This article was featured on Huffington Post

Eating “paleo” refers to consuming foods eaten by man during the Paleolithic Era, i.e., meat, vegetables, fruits, sugars and other natural foods found in nature. All processed foods are considered a “no no” and are banished from your diet.

This back to basic approach of consuming only foods found in nature has been embraced by millions of people and is currently all the rage. Of course, like many things, the paleo way of eating is not without its controversy due to its ban on white flour and many of our other beloved carbohydrate filled comfort foods such as cookies, bread, cakes, etc.; nevertheless, many nutritional experts applaud it as a common sense approach to healthy eating.

So what could paleo eating and success in your business and career possibly have in common?

Actually – pretty much everything. Approaching your career/business from a back to basic, natural common sense approach is vital to your success. Yes, professional knowledge and modern technology will also key components to your success – make no mistake about it – all the latest and greatest gadgets and technological advances will be absolutely meaningless if you lose sight of what is at the very heart of your business/career – and that is your client – and your ability to build a healthy trusting relationship with them! As Stephen Covey said: All Success Begins With Relationships!

Following are 3 “paleo-like” ways to nurture the core of your success on a daily basis – and it is much more about who you are than about what you know.

1. Authenticity – whatever you do – it is imperative you are authentic and genuine. Show up in a real and genuine way. Don’t fake being anything you aren’t because it will only be a matter of time before you are exposed for whom you really are -and your lack of authenticity will come back to haunt you in both obvious and not so obvious ways!

2. Collaborate with others. Although you alone are responsible for meeting your professional objectives and ultimately – your success; it is imperative you remember it is NOT all about you! Collaborate with others and remember that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts!

3. Character and Integrity must be an integral part of not only what you do- but who you really are! The golden rule applies here: i.e., treat others with the same respect and courtesy that you would like to be treated with. Not only will this make you likeable (and yes, it matters a lot if people like you), it will help you build a positive rapport with others. Approaching every aspect of your life with character and integrity provides you with the added benefit of building authentic relationships based on trust. No one wants to do business with anyone they don’t trust!

In the final analysis, we are all ultimately responsible for our own success; however, no one has ever achieved success on their own. Therefore, as Paleolithic man survived by eating natural foods, so to will your business and career not only survive – but also thrive – if you show up in a genuine manner, collaborate and help others without worrying about what’s in it for you – and live your life with the utmost integrity and character. Because when all is said and done – the good guy – and gal – will prevail!

In Just Three Words

three-wordsIn the world of business, or in any aspect of life, the ability to connect and communicate is absolutely essential.  How well you are able to conduct this activity, to communicate, is often the difference from being successful, often quite rapidly, or not successful at all.

In just three words, a message may be communicated and often in a powerful lasting way.

Consider for a moment the company, the brand, Nike and their three words – Just Do It.

These three words have taken on a life of their own.  Often repeated in all types of communication these three words represent Nike and their brand.  No matter where or when these three words are quoted, for a moment, your mind is thinking, Nike.

What might your three words be? The three words to describe what you represent.

The three words your business represents.  The three words which describe what you are about. In just three words.

Here are a few three word examples for you to review which communicate a message:

  • I love you.
  • I am sorry.
  • You are hot.
  • You are best.
  • Thinking about you.
  • Way to go.
  • How are you.
  • You go Girl.
  • Got your back.
  • Get good first.
  • Do it afraid.
  • Build your image.
  • Live your purpose.
  • Ready to rock.
  • God bless you.
  • Never give up.
  • You freaking rock.
  • Stop drop roll.
  • Always be closing.
  • Stick with it.
  • Stay the course.
  • Body mind spirit.
  • Purpose passion spirit.
  • First to fight.
  • Deeds Not Words.
  • Protect and defend.

In just three words consider each of these examples.  What comes into your mind?

A picture is painted. A message is communicated. In just three words.

Here are a few more examples of messages communicated in just three words:

  • Share the passion.
  • A servant’s heart.
  • Lead by example.
  • I don’t know.
  • Have great fun.
  • Ride the wave.
  • All I have.
  • Love from within.
  • You are safe.
  • We are one.
  • Raise the bar.
  • Liberate your soul.
  • Lift you up.
  • Happy to help.
  • An unforgettable experience.
  • I voted today.

Take a few moments and let me know some of your three word statements.

Will you consider, in just three words, how to describe your business? In just three words how to describe what you are about?

Take your time. It’s not a race. Be clear and concise.  This makes your message easy to remember, repeat and be understood.

Do You Know What Your Customers Want?

know-your-customersAt the NJ Shore, ice cream trucks still roam the local streets. Each beach block the ringing of the chimes or bells brings out running children laughing with glee and happiness to purchase their favorite treat.

Imagine if when they arrived at the truck all that was available was fruit! Nice wholesome apples, pears, peaches or a banana to purchase – no ice cream.

How would the children react? How would they feel?

The reason for bringing this information up in this discussion today is to ask you how you determine what is important to your clients and customers? And, how often do you check in with your clients and customers to make certain you know what is important to them and you are providing them with what is important to them. Often – this is easier said than accomplished!

Clients, customers and prospects are continually changing their view and opinion on what is most important to them. Speak with anyone in retail and they will be happy to describe why store layouts are changed and for those in fashion why the styles always change.

It is to stay ahead of the curve. By creating the change before the consumer determines they need the change, the retailer is still somewhat in control. When the consumer changes their opinion about something, on their own, the retailer may lose their customer forever.

In a similar fashion, anyone in a provider or service based business must stay on top of the needs and wants of their clients. The continual learning and growing to stay more than current, to stay ahead of the curve is not just a necessity it is a requirement. By surrounding yourself and being a part of the leading minds in your area of expertise, you become part of the this leading edge.

You may be thinking, “I don’t need to be that much on the leading edge, everything is fine right now, my customers are happy.” Okay, you are permitted to feel this way.

By point of fact, an entire industry in the event video space was completely turned upside down almost overnight. Technology has created the opportunity for virtually anyone to offer a high quality photography and video service including editing, adding in music and more for a deep discount for family events such as weddings in comparison to only a few years ago where ‘specialists’ were running a full time business requiring booking months in advance and charging premium prices for the service.

In every geographic region these type of businesses were shutting down. Only the few who evolved, who recognized they must offer something more, something unique, something the customer wanted were able to stay in business and thrive.

In summary, always be asking, always check in with your clients, customers and prospects on what they care about.  What do they want?

Ready To Jump Ship?

Ready To Jump Ship? Are you in a position, known as a job, and you are thinking, “I have this idea, this passion, to do XYZ, time keeps moving and I just need to leave this J – O – B, and go do it!”. Are you thinking this thought right now? And how often do you think this thought? Good for you for thinking.

It is great that you have a drive and a passion inside of you. Numerous people are just floating. The topic of floating is an entire article to be published in a major publication to be released soon. A word of caution – take heed. Create a plan. If possible have a partner or another person to conduct your new venture with. Together work on a plan. Specific actions items and dates attached. Work with an experienced coach to bring accountability and to ask you both questions which will push you and bring about enlightened thinking.

Initially complete as much of the foundation items as possible before leaving your job. The job is bringing in income. Your new venture must show the ability to replace that income before you leave your job. What exactly does this mean? It will mean different things for different people depending upon their overhead and their monthly budget.

One item it does mean for everyone is to prove that your concept will be one that people are willing to pay money for. You may be offering a service or a product. It cannot be created in a bubble. You must know, for a fact, if people will pay for the service or the product. For certain people, which is likely the majority, an income stream must be seen from the new business venture prior to exiting their job. In the planning process dream big – on paper!  Begin to map out the growth plan you are shooting for and by when.

You may be thinking, “Mitch, seriously, why?” It is critical to conduct this activity now as this will form the basis for certain items which must be completed sooner than later. One item might be to set up the proper business entity by working with a CPA and a lawyer. The same for the banking relationship. If your path for growth is slower, it is possible that you will want to wait a little longer before taking these steps. Either way it is wise to speak with a CPA and a lawyer about your plans early on in the process.

In summary, don’t jump ship without a plan and a strategy. If you do not know how to create one contact me. We will work together so you have what you need to follow your passion.
