Change These Three Habits Now!

Change these three habits nowRight this second stop what you are doing and write out the three most time wasting unproductive habits or behaviors you have – one, two , three – write these three out. Oh right, you don’t have any! Okay then send this request to the three people who are closest to you – relationship wise as in friends or family – and ask them to tell you what these three most time wasting unproductive habits or behaviors you have are.

Read through your list or their list now and what is your response? Agree or disagree?

Side note: Did you know you can change the way you eat? If you want to create the habit of eating and craving healthier foods and snacks have some fresh pieces of carrots, broccoli or cauliflower available and when you have the afternoon munchies eat these items instead of that pack of Nabisco Oreo Cookies. You will find after a short period of time you will crave the healthier snack options.

For each of your time wasting and unproductive habits write out next to the item how and when you will stop doing this and begin to do something else which is time saving and productive instead.

Side note: It is really funny when this conversation happens. The excuse of why the poor habit or behavior cannot be changed right now.

“I am on the road too much for business so there is no time to deal with it right now.” “We are planning a few vacation trips for the summer right now so this habit changing stuff will have to wait.”

Nothing could be further from the truth. In actual fact each of these examples are the perfect reason why the habit change should take place exactly then!

A change in environment will allow the triggers which control your habits to accept new habits more readily. Without getting into the Neuroscience of it right here – feel free to check it out as it is a fact. This is why vacation time is the perfect time to change a bad habit.

Here is a thought – feel free to substitute any type of habit or behavior you wish to change – let’s open this up to other areas not only time wasting unproductive habits or behaviors – what else do you have? Maybe something in your personal life?

Follow the same process from the top and see what happens. Let me know how you make out in the comments area.

Three Winning Moves For You In The New Year

three-winning-movesBy now everyone has given up on their New Year’s Resolutions and if not we all will within the next week or two – Guaranteed!

With no real motivation and accountability changing habits and behavior are virtually impossible. Allow me to offer an idea for you. Take on my suggestions for the New Year instead of making up your own.

Here are three winning moves for you in the New Year.

ONE:        Supportive Friends

TWO:       Positive Outlook

THREE:   Self Censorship

Supportive Friends

Okay so you have known this person or a specific group of people for many years. The last few years you feel you have been growing and learning and this group of friends seems to be stuck in their own stuff. They are always questioning you about why you choose to do what you are doing? Each time you speak with them or meet with them or go out with them you find yourself depressed the next day.

Time to say good-bye! Either cut the cord or slowly wean yourself from this group of friends. They need to be replaced with people who are more supportive and positive toward you and what you are thinking about, learning and growing as an individual.

There are a few companies who follow this rule – the bottom fifteen percent of employees based upon certain performance measures are let go every single year.

Positive Outlook

When you begin each day with a positive outlook, a positive frame up of the day ahead, you will be in a better mood, a better state of energy and you will think more clearly. Bottom line you will perform more effectively and efficiently. A way to make this happen on a regular basis is to utilize positive affirmations.

Positive affirmations actually reprogram your patterns of thought. They change the way you feel and think about almost everything. Positive change happens naturally as you have replaced negative thinking with your new positive thoughts and statements.

Create a series of positively worded affirmations and have these either on your electronic device or utilize index cards so these are available to you each and everyday to read and state aloud especially first thing in the morning.

Self Censorship

You may be a TV or Cable TV person or subscribe to online feeds where each minute of the day you are bombarded with negative news stories or horrifying or sad incidents.

STOP IT! STOP IT NOW! You must be your own best censor. Either select a few defined minutes of each day to get your fill of these stories or stop listening to or reading these stories from this point forward. There is not one piece of positive energy flowing to you while you are absorbing this negative information in a multi-sensory environment.

These Three Winning Moves For You In The New Year will have an immediate and tremendous impact on your business life and your personal life. In fact, Psychologist John Gottman at the University of Washington, found that there is a method of self measurement, like a thermostat operating in healthy marriages that regulates the balance between positive and negative. He found that relationships run into serious troubles when the negative to positive ratio becomes quite imbalanced. Gottman found that the optimal ratio is five positive to one negative.

In summary, the point is we can change our habits, and we can focus on the positive aspects of life in everything we do. When we acquire new habits, our brains acquire “mirror neurons” and develop a positive perspective that can spread to other people like a virus. This is not about a bunch of ‘WooWoo’ stuff or ‘GoodyTwoShoes’, it is about being able to reprogram our brains!

Have You Looked In The Mirror Lately?

“You must ‘be’ before you can ‘do’ or ‘have'”.   ~ Paul J. Meyer

Business Ever take the time to allow your mind to relax?  For me the sound of the ocean and walking in the sand is about as relaxing as it gets.  Your mind is wandering and thoughts seem to drift in and out.  What happens after this is a complete gift.  Once your mind is in the completely relaxed state without the daily distractions of email, cell phones and more, you have the opportunity to honestly appraise yourself.  Just “be”.

“Ok Mitch, uh be who, or be whom?”   Exactly!

“Okay, so what are you saying to do?”  Look at yourself in the mirror!

No, this is not about how you look in your bathing suit! Or it very well might be. It is about who are you, what is it you want to achieve, what is your thing, really. Not the armored up version of you which you present yourself as, rather the real deal your real mission and purpose.  Then continue, what are you doing about it?  Are you living and acting in harmony with this answer?  Would your family, friends and co-workers agree with these statements and agree this is how you show up each and every day?

It is actually never too late to start. If the reality is not consistent with your desired self what actions might you begin to take to turn this around?  The idea is to begin slowly.

This is habit change and behavior change.  Similar to a fad diet, if you drastically try to change everything you might be successful in the short term, yet there will not be lasting change.  Write everything down you are not satisfied with about yourself.  Rate these and prioritize the list.  Begin with the items which are the most important to you or will have the most significant impact.

Record what action you are taking next to the current habit or behavior you do not like.

Check in often with yourself to confirm you are in fact taking these actions and making these strides. When creating habit change and behavior change it has been proven that the most lasting method for implementing these is to have a coach or an accountability partner or both.  Through a schedule where you are meeting with each other at least each week or two on time and on schedule will assist greatly in a positive outcome.
